In 1792, the Mexico City mint produced a small series of pattern strikes to test revised portrait punches for Carlos IV — the transition from his father Carlos III's coinage had already been underway, but die preparation for the new monarch's likeness required approval from Madrid before full production commenced. These patterns were never intended for circulation and were struck in extremely limited numbers for official review.
The 1792 date places this piece at the cusp of that changeover, making its status as a pattern rather than a currency strike the defining fact of its existence. Madrid's sign-off arrived the same year.
