Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Carlos III facing right, serving as the portrait type for Carlos IV during the transitional coinage of 1789-1791, as dies engraved under the previous reign continued in use. The effigy displays finely detailed hair tied with a ribbon at the nape, a laurel wreath, and a classically draped truncation. The circumferential legend reads CAROLUS IV DEI GRATIA, with the mint date 1790 positioned in the lower exergual area between two pellets. The entire design is enclosed within a border of fine denticles.
