Additional information

Carlos IV acceded to the Spanish throne in December 1788, but the Santiago mint continued striking 8 reales bearing the bust of his predecessor Carlos III well into 1791 — a lag that was standard practice across colonial mints until new dies with the reigning monarch's portrait arrived from Spain. These transitional issues carry Carlos IV's name in the legend while retaining the older bust, a combination that confuses novice collectors and delights specialists.

Santiago's output during this window was modest relative to the great Mexican and Potosí mints, keeping survivors in genuinely limited supply.
