The 1762 8 reales falls within the milled "columnario" series produced at multiple New World mints, but this date carries particular weight: it coincides with Spain's disastrous entry into the Seven Years' War via the Family Compact, which brought British seizure of Havana and Manila within months. The ransoms and trade disruptions that followed strained colonial silver flows considerably.
Carlos III had only recently overhauled New World minting standards in 1732, and the uniformity of the milled coinage was still relatively new by 1762 — hand-struck cob reales had circulated alongside milled pieces well into mid-century.
