Reverse description The reverse displays the bold cross potent with lions and castles in the quadrants, the characteristic design of colonial Spanish-American cob coinage struck at the Mexico City mint. The cross is deeply struck and partially visible owing to the irregular shape of the flan. To the left, the mint mark 'M' (Mexico) and assayer initial (G or L depending on date) are partially legible. The wavy lines of the sea, a common background element on cob reverses, appear to the right of the cross. A circular hole is visible at the upper right, consistent with the same perforation noted on the obverse.
