Reverse description Two crowned Pillars of Hercules rise from waves, representing the Strait of Gibraltar and the motto of imperial ambition. The assayer's initial 'R' (for assayer Rodrigo de Espinosa) appears below the columns, while a small cross is placed at the top in lieu of a denomination numeral, consistent with early Mexico City mint practice. The legend PLVS VLTRA, the imperial device of Carlos I, is distributed across the field surrounding the pillars. The design follows the established type for early colonial macuquina 8 reales coinage of the first Mexico City mint.
