Descrição do reverso The Chilean national coat of arms occupies the central field, consisting of a quartered shield bearing a five-pointed star, surmounted by a plumed crest and flanked on either side by laurel and oak branches tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The denomination 8 R is inscribed to the left and right of the shield respectively. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE arcs around the upper periphery, with the mint mark So and assayer initials positioned within the legend. The date appears in large numerals at the base of the design, and the entire composition is enclosed within a beaded or dentilated border.

Informações adicionais

Chile's early republican coinage was struck under chronic production difficulties — the Santiago mint suffered persistent shortages of skilled assayers and consistent silver supply throughout the 1830s and 1840s, resulting in notoriously uneven planchets and variable fineness across the run. Assayer initials on individual pieces are the primary tool for dating within the series.

These coins circulated widely beyond Chilean borders, accepted across the Pacific coast trade networks and into California during the gold rush years, where any silver of credible weight found ready use.
