The 8 Pengő denomination is an oddity — no national currency ordinarily needs an eight-unit note. This provisional issue emerged during the transition away from the hyperinflated Korona, with the Pengő introduced in 1926 to stabilize Hungarian finances under League of Nations supervision. The value was almost certainly derived by overprinting or revaluing existing Korona stock at a fixed conversion rate, producing an arithmetic denomination that would never appear under normal monetary planning.
Engraved by Traugott Willi at Orell Füssli in Zurich, the intaglio work reflects that firm's precision standards. Willi's name appears on several central European issues of the period.
