The "Constitutional" designation marks these as products of the Trienio Liberal — the three-year period beginning in 1820 when General Riego's revolt forced Fernando VII to restore the 1812 Constitution. Fernando, who had spent years dismantling liberal reforms, swore an oath to the constitution under effective military duress. The Segovia mint, one of Spain's oldest operating facilities with its distinctive aqueduct-powered machinery, continued striking copper maravedis throughout this tense interlude until French Bourbon intervention in 1823 extinguished the liberal government and restored Fernando's absolute rule.
