| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned castle shield, rendered in the characteristic bold relief of hammered coinage, with the fortified tower motif clearly articulated. The mint mark appears to the left of the shield and the value mark VIII is positioned to the right. A partial circular legend in Latin reads PHILIPPVS·IIII·D·G, running along the periphery. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of cast and hand-struck cob coinage of this period, with the design often off-center. |
