Obverse description Countermark applied to the coin's obverse consisting of a crowned numeral or date within a circular punch. The year of countermarking, 1642, is incuse within a beaded or plain circle surmounted by a royal crown, all struck into the copper flan. The countermark is the dominant element of the field, applied over the original host coin's design. The style is characteristic of the resello (countermark) revaluations ordered under Felipe IV during the monetary reform decrees of 1641-1642.
