Gelon II — son of Hiero II — ruled Syracuse for less than a year before dying at the Battle of the Himera River in 214 BC, a catastrophic Carthaginian victory that effectively ended Syracusan independence from Roman entanglement. This issue belongs to the final, desperate phase of that dynasty, minted while Syracuse was nominally allied with Carthage following Rome's disaster at Cannae in 216 BC. The political calculation proved fatal. Within two years of these coins entering circulation, Marcellus had the city under siege.
