Issued as part of Portugal's UEFA Euro 2004 commemorative program — the tournament hosted entirely on Portuguese soil, the first time the country had staged a major international football championship. The "Passion" theme was one of four values used to structure the coin series, alongside Fair Play, Joy, and Union. Gold strikes like this were produced in tiny numbers relative to the silver and bimetallic variants in the same program, making them the least encountered of the trio by a considerable margin.
