Croatia's Croatian Coldblood — the Posavina horse, a heavy draft breed developed in the lowland river valleys of the Sava basin — was formally recognized as a distinct breed in the late 19th century and has been in near-continuous agricultural use since. Population numbers collapsed sharply after mechanized farming displaced draft animals across Central Europe in the postwar decades, and the breed remains on conservation watchlists today.
The denomination is denominated in euros following Croatia's eurozone accession on 1 January 2023, making this among the earlier commemorative euro issues struck by the Croatian National Bank under the new currency regime.
