| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse features the Estonian coat of arms at center — a shield bearing three passant blue lions on a gold field — rendered in high relief and framed by crossed oak branches with acorns, symbolizing national strength and continuity. The legend EESTI VABARIIK arcs along the upper right periphery in incuse Latin characters, with the date 2024 positioned to the right of the shield. The design is executed in a frosted relief against a mirror-polished field, characteristic of proof coinage. The overall composition is oriented in medal alignment and bounded by a raised rim. |

Tartu — known historically as Dorpat under German and Swedish administration — was a founding member of the Hanseatic League's eastern network, functioning as a critical waypoint in the Baltic trade corridor connecting Novgorod's fur and wax markets to Lübeck and beyond. The city's Hanseatic membership ran from the 13th century through the League's effective dissolution in 1669, a span that outlasted most of its counterparts.
Estonia has issued Hanseatic-themed commemoratives honoring its medieval trading cities in sequence; Tallinn and Pärnu preceded this Tartu release.
