Aversbeschreibung Central crowned quartered shield of the Spanish royal arms, displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León alternating in the quarters, with the Granada pomegranate in base and the Bourbon fleur-de-lis escutcheon in pretence, all surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The shield is encircled by a decorative chain representing the Order of the Golden Fleece, with a small figure of the fleece pendant at the base. The peripheral legend reads PHILIPPUS V DEI GRA, separated by rosette stops, and the entire design is bounded by a milled or grained border.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Felipe V abdicated in January 1724 in favor of his son Luis I, then reclaimed the throne seven months later when Luis died of smallpox at seventeen. The 1725 date places this coin squarely in the chaotic resumption of his reign, a period when Spanish colonial minting infrastructure was being reorganized under pressure from both Bourbon administrative reform and persistent fraud at the provincial mints. Cuenca was among the lesser cob-era assay offices, and its output of milled coinage in this denomination is substantially thinner than contemporaneous production at Madrid or Seville.
