Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Castile and León, displaying castles and lions in alternating quarters, surmounted by a large crown. The shield is flanked by the pillars of Hercules on either side. A partial circular Latin legend surrounds the armorial device, with the date and assayer initial partially visible along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan, characteristic of cob coinage.
