Ecuador's 8 escudos of 1844 was struck at the Quito mint, which had been operating since the colonial period and continued producing gold coinage into the early republican era using inherited Spanish minting infrastructure. The transition from Spanish colonial to republican issues was administratively messy — the Quito mint struggled with inconsistent planchet preparation throughout the 1840s, and survivors from this period frequently show adjustment marks from file work done to bring blanks to proper weight before striking.
KM#28 is among the final years of the escudo denomination in Ecuador; the country would shift to a decimal system within decades.
