Additional information

Chile's 8 escudos of this period were struck at the Santiago mint during the republic's earliest years, when the new government was still fighting Spanish royalist forces in the south. The mint itself had been operating under Spanish colonial authority until 1817, and the transition to republican coinage was administratively chaotic — early dies were cut by craftsmen who had trained entirely within the colonial system, which accounts for the stylistic conservatism of these pieces relative to contemporaneous South American republican issues.

Production ran unevenly across the sixteen-year span, with assayer-marked varieties offering the primary means of dating individual strikes more precisely than the broad date range suggests.
