Gustav Adolf II of Sweden occupied Mainz in December 1631, forcing Archbishop Anselm Casimir Wambolt von Umstadt to flee the city. This coin was struck under Swedish military occupation — the Archbishopric's mint continuing to operate, but under circumstances entirely outside ecclesiastical control. The year 1632 saw Gustav Adolf at the height of his German campaign before his death at Lützen in November of that year.
Large multiple-ducat pieces of this type were produced as presentation or donative issues rather than for circulation. Ahlström's census records only a handful of confirmed survivors.
