正面描述 Equestrian portrait of Frederick Augustus I in full armor, wearing a crown and a flowing cloak, mounted on a rearing horse facing right. The sovereign holds a baton of command in his right hand, conveying martial authority and regal bearing. Beneath the horse's hooves lies an ornately decorated heraldic shield bearing the arms of Saxony, serving as a ground element beneath the composition. The design is rendered in high relief with fine engraved detail on the horse's mane, the rider's armor, and the elaborate saddlecloth. The broad flat field surrounds the central device without a surrounding legend on this face.

附加信息

Frederick Augustus I — better known outside Saxony as Augustus II of Poland, or simply Augustus the Strong — spent extravagantly on court display, and large multiple-ducat pieces like this eight-ducat were instruments of that policy as much as they were coins. They functioned primarily as presentation pieces and diplomatic gifts rather than circulating currency, which explains why survivors tend to appear in grades inconsistent with any meaningful commercial use.

1711 falls squarely within the period of his second continuous reign over Poland-Saxony, restored after the humiliation of the Treaty of Altranstädt in 1706, when Charles XII of Sweden had forced his abdication. Stanislaus Leszczyński's brief interregnum ended with Charles XII's catastrophic defeat at Poltava in 1709.
