Amand von Buseck ruled as Prince-Abbot of Fulda from 1737 until his death in 1756, and this large multiple ducat was struck in the first full year of his tenure. Fulda held the rank of an imperial abbey — directly subordinate to the Holy Roman Emperor rather than any territorial prince — which gave its abbots both the authority and the incentive to issue prestige coinage of this scale.
Eight-ducat pieces were never meant for commerce. Issues like this functioned as diplomatic gifts and presentation pieces at the imperial court in Vienna.
