Additional information

Ferdinando di Borbone ruled Parma as a Spanish Bourbon client duchy under heavy French cultural influence — his court hosted the typographer Giambattista Bodoni, whose famous typeface was cut here during these exact years. The duchy's finances were perpetually strained, and large-denomination gold multiples like this 8 Doppie piece were struck more for dynastic display and diplomatic gifting than everyday commerce.

When French Revolutionary forces occupied Parma in 1796, Ferdinando surrendered without resistance. The occupation effectively ended meaningful coinage production, making the later dates in this ten-year span considerably scarcer than earlier strikes.
