Henry Lawson was born in a tent on the Grenfell goldfields in 1867, and his fiction and verse would go on to define how Australians imagined the bush — not as romance, but as grinding isolation. The 150th anniversary issue arrives in a year when his cultural stature remains largely uncontested, even as his reputation for alcoholism and poverty in later life complicates the mythology.
The five-ounce format places this firmly in Perth Mint's high-denomination proof program, which has used the $8 face value since the 1990s as a legal-tender vehicle for oversized silver issues.
