Obverse description Central field displays the castle of Genoa (Castello), a turreted fortification rendered in the Gothic style typical of Genoese medieval coinage, set within an inner beaded circle. The castle is depicted with a prominent central tower flanked by lower lateral towers, a long-standing heraldic emblem of the city. A dotted border separates the central device from the circumferential Latin legend. The obverse legend reads DVX • GVB • RP • GENV, identifying the Doge and Governor of the Republic of Genoa, interrupted by a cross pattée at the commencement. The overall style is characteristic of hammered billon small coinage of the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century.
