| Obverse description | The obverse presents an entirely typographic design without a papal effigy, featuring the mint name TER / NI inscribed in two lines within a raised inner circle at the centre of the field, with the date 1797 placed below. The circular legend PIVS SEXTUS P · M · A · XXIII runs around the periphery between the inner raised ring and the heavily reeded outer border, with small six-pointed stars serving as punctuation marks. The lettering is bold and deeply incuse-struck in a Roman capital style consistent with emergency or subsidiary coinage of the late Papal States. The overall design is austere and purely inscriptional, reflecting the utilitarian character of this billon denomination issued under Pope Pius VI in the twenty-third year of his pontificate. |
