| Obverse description | The obverse presents an entirely typographic design without a papal effigy, featuring the mint name TER / NI inscribed in two lines within a raised inner circle at the centre of the field, with the date 1797 placed below. The circular legend PIVS SEXTUS P · M · A · XXIII runs around the periphery between the inner raised ring and the heavily reeded outer border, with small six-pointed stars serving as punctuation marks. The lettering is bold and deeply incuse-struck in a Roman capital style consistent with emergency or subsidiary coinage of the late Papal States. The overall design is austere and purely inscriptional, reflecting the utilitarian character of this billon denomination issued under Pope Pius VI in the twenty-third year of his pontificate. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays the denomination inscription OTTO / BAIOC / CHI arranged in three bold horizontal lines of Roman capitals across the entire field, within a plain raised inner circle. No figurative imagery or additional devices are present; the design is wholly typographic, emphasising legibility and the denomination value. The heavily reeded edge border, visible on all sides, frames the composition and is consistent with the obverse treatment. The letter forms are large, well-spaced, and deeply struck, typical of the utilitarian billon coinage produced at the Terni mint for Pius VI. The unadorned field surrounding the lettering retains a flat, unpolished surface characteristic of circulation-grade billon issues of the Papal States. |
