Postal orders in British India were administered under the Post Office Act and functioned as a low-denomination remittance instrument, widely used by soldiers, migrant workers, and rural populations who had no access to banking. The 8 annas denomination sat at exactly half a rupee — practical for small transactions and commonly issued at post offices across the subcontinent during the war years, when military pay remittances drove postal order volumes sharply upward.
The 1944 date places this squarely in the period of acute wartime paper shortages, when postal stationery quality across British India declined noticeably. Surviving examples from this run frequently show thinning at the fold lines.
