Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera served as president of Colombia four separate times between 1845 and 1867 — a record unmatched in Colombian history — and led the Liberal forces that defeated the Conservative government in the 1860 civil war, subsequently abolishing the concordat with the Vatican and expelling the Jesuits. This commemorative was issued under the numismatic program that Colombia ran through the late 1970s, producing large-format silver pieces tied to national historical figures for collector export rather than domestic circulation.
