Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in October 1968, and the Rome-struck gold issues of 1970 were among the new republic's earliest attempts to establish a numismatic presence on the international collector market. The Italian State Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato) produced several denominations for the young nation, none of which saw meaningful circulation — they were aimed squarely at foreign buyers rather than domestic use.
Francisco Macías Nguema was already consolidating his dictatorship by the time these were struck, having declared a state of emergency in 1969 after a coup attempt.
