Budapest formally became a single city on November 17, 1873, when Buda, Óbuda, and Pest were merged by Act XVI of the Hungarian Parliament — a unification driven as much by economic necessity and railway logistics as by any civic idealism. The 125th anniversary fell in a Hungary freshly oriented toward NATO accession, which meant commemorative budget runs were modest and domestic in character.
The .500 fineness is notable — half-silver was a deliberate cost-containing choice the Hungarian Mint returned to repeatedly in the 1990s for mid-tier commemoratives.
