Portugal hosted the XVII European Art Exhibition in 1983, a traveling scholarly exhibition organized under the Council of Europe that had rotated among member states since 1954. The Portuguese edition focused on the art of the Manueline period — the distinctly Iberian late-Gothic style that flourished during the Age of Discovery. INCM struck this commemorative in the same year as the exhibition itself, an unusually tight production timeline that occasionally resulted in limited secondary-market distribution outside Portugal.
