Bosnia and Herzegovina issued this coin in 1993 while the country was actively under siege — Sarajevo's shelling had been ongoing for over a year by the time this piece was struck. The newly independent state, recognized internationally only in April 1992, used Olympic-themed coinage partly as a nation-building exercise, asserting institutional normalcy at a moment when the country's survival was genuinely uncertain.
The Lillehammer Games of 1994 were the nominal occasion. Yugoslavia had competed in cross-country skiing at every Winter Olympics since 1948.
