The First World Air Games were held in Turkey in 1997, based out of İzmir, marking the first time the FAI had staged a comprehensive multi-discipline air sports competition under a single event banner. Turkey's selection as host was partly a product of its geography — a country straddling two continents with consistent thermal conditions attractive to gliding and paragliding disciplines. The bronze antique finish was a deliberate choice for the commemorative series, applied to distinguish collector issues from the aluminum and steel alloys then dominating Turkish circulation coinage amid chronic inflation that had rendered the lira nearly worthless in everyday transactions.
