| Reverse description | Central motif depicts two clasped hands symbolizing the Turkey-European Union Customs Union agreement, set against a horizontal banner. To the left of the handshake appears the European Union emblem, and to the right the Turkish crescent and star. Twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a circle surround the central design, referencing the European Union's emblematic ring of stars. The bilingual legend 'GUMRUK BIRLIGI' curves along the upper rim and 'CUSTOMS UNION' along the lower rim, presenting the inscription in both Turkish and English. |

Turkey's push for European integration in the mid-1990s generated a short run of commemorative silver issues tied to aspirational trade and customs milestones. The European Customs Union agreement, which took effect on January 1, 1996, marked the culmination of a process begun under the 1963 Ankara Agreement — making Turkey the first non-European country to achieve full customs union status with the EU without membership. The arrangement remains in force today, and remains controversial, binding Turkey to EU external tariff policy with no vote in setting it.
