The 11th World Forestry Congress convened in Antalya in October 1997, the first time the event — held roughly every six years under FAO auspices since 1926 — was hosted in Turkey. The congress drew delegates from over 140 countries at a moment when Turkish deforestation rates were under international scrutiny. By 1997, Turkey's chronic inflation had so eroded the lira that 750,000 units represented a coin of negligible purchasing power, minted largely for the commemorative market rather than circulation.
