Additional information

India's official languages have been a political fault line since independence. The 1950 constitution designated Hindi as the official language of the Union, with English as a transitional associate — a compromise that was supposed to expire in 1965. When that deadline approached, violent protests erupted across Tamil Nadu, where the perceived imposition of Hindi was seen as northern cultural dominance. The Official Languages Act of 1963 and its 1967 amendment effectively made English a permanent co-official language, defusing the crisis but leaving the question permanently unresolved.

The commemorative 75-rupee denomination itself was introduced in 2023 to mark India's 75th year of independence, establishing a new face value with no circulation intent.
