背面描述 Central design consists of the Cross of the Order of Christ, rendered as a broad Latin cross with slightly splayed arms, each quadrant containing a trefoil (clover-leaf) ornament in relief, recalling the Avis cross tradition of Portuguese coinage. Small trefoil or cross ornaments are also placed between the arms of the cross. The peripheral legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — encircles the design in Latin capitals, with small cross stops separating the words. The overall composition is geometric and heraldic in character, consistent with Portuguese colonial silver coinage of the late 18th century. The reeded edge is visible at the coin's periphery.

附加信息

The Azorean 75 réis denomination is an artifact of a peculiar colonial monetary arithmetic. When mainland Portuguese silver circulated in the islands, it was officially revalued upward by 25% to compensate for the chronic shortage of specie in the archipelago — meaning a 60 réis coin from Lisbon became a 75 réis coin simply by decree. This particular issue, rather than relying on countermarked mainland pieces, was struck specifically for the islands at a denomination that existed nowhere else in the Portuguese monetary system.
