Greiz was the capital of the tiny principality of Reuss-Greiz, one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Empire, and by 1921 the city was issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — like hundreds of other German municipalities scrambling to compensate for the chronic coin shortages of the early Weimar period. Otto Henning A.G. was a local Greiz printer, which kept production costs down and turnaround fast — a practical choice when inflation was already making precise monetary planning nearly impossible.
