Issued specifically to commemorate the Mitteldeutsche Notgeldausstellung — a 1922 exhibition dedicated to the notgeld phenomenon itself, at a moment when Germany's hyperinflationary spiral was making such emergency currency ubiquitous enough to collect. The concept of an exhibition celebrating notgeld while notgeld was still actively necessary says something blunt about how normalized monetary chaos had become by that point.
Printed by Otto Richters & Co. on home turf in Erfurt, which was unusual — many German municipalities farmed commemorative issues out to specialist printers. The watermarked paper lifts it slightly above the cheaper exhibition souvenirs of the period.
