Landsberg in Oberschlesien — today Górażdże, Poland — issued this notgeld in 1921 during one of the most politically volatile stretches in the region's modern history. The Upper Silesia plebiscite took place in March of that year, with the population voting on whether to join Germany or Poland; the subsequent partition in late 1921 assigned this particular area to Germany, though the boundaries remained bitterly contested for years afterward.
Local municipal scrip of this type was a direct response to the chronic small-change shortage that plagued German cities in the early Weimar period.
