| Opmerkingen |
The Künstlerverein St. Lucas was an artists' association in Magdeburg, and like hundreds of German cultural and civic organizations in 1921, it issued its own Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitute scrip — during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. What makes St. Lucas notes genuinely interesting is that the issuer was not a municipality or a merchant guild but a fine arts body, meaning the design work was almost certainly done in-house rather than farmed out to a commercial printer's stock imagery. Whether that shows in the execution depends on the specific note.
Magdeburg's notgeld output from this period is well-documented but enormous in volume; St. Lucas pieces appear infrequently enough to suggest limited print runs.
