备注

Saalfeld's 1921 Notgeld series was among the more historically ambitious of the Thuringian municipal issues — the town leaned hard into its medieval and early modern past at a moment when Weimar Germany's municipal authorities were scrambling to produce emergency small change following the postwar coin shortage. The Wiedemannsche Druckerei was a local firm, which kept both the printing contract and any pride of authorship inside the town walls.

Notgeld of this period was frequently collected rather than spent, a fact the issuers knew and exploited — series were designed to encourage set completion, effectively subsidizing municipal budgets through philatelic demand.
