Hamburg's 1921 Kultur und Sportwoche notgeld series was issued to commemorate a specific municipal cultural and sports festival — a common pretext among German cities in the early 1920s for producing collectible emergency currency that was never seriously intended for ordinary commerce. Collectors drove demand, and issuers like Hamburg obliged, sometimes printing quantities far exceeding any plausible local circulation need.

Coutinho u. Meyer was a Hamburg printing house active in the notgeld boom, handling several local municipal commissions during this period. The 82 × 62 mm format was a practical choice for the printer's sheet layout, not a denomination-specific standard.
