Saalfeld's 1921 Notgeld series was one of the more ambitious municipal issues in Thuringia, explicitly conceived as a collectible set rather than emergency currency. The "History Series" designation was no accident — towns across Weimar Germany had discovered that themed Notgeld sold to collectors generated real revenue, sometimes exceeding the face value printed on the notes themselves. Saalfeld leaned into this deliberately.

Wiedemannsche Druckerei AG was a local operation, which kept production costs low and turnaround fast during the inflationary pressures of 1921.
