One of the more unusual issuers in the German Notgeld period: a Lutheran regional church issuing its own emergency currency. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Landeskirche des Landesteiles Lübeck held a distinct administrative identity because the Lübeck territory, though absorbed into the Weimar state structure, retained separate ecclesiastical jurisdiction — a legacy of the old Free City's institutional independence. That the church itself stepped into the currency gap in 1921 says something about how completely the small-denomination money supply had collapsed.
Printed locally by H. G. Rahtgens and designed by Gröning, the note carries a watermark — relatively uncommon for municipal-level Notgeld of this denomination.
