The Deutsch-Hanseatischer Kolonialgedenktag — the German-Hanseatic Colonial Memorial Day — was a 1921 commemorative event organized jointly across Hamburg, Berlin, and Bremen to keep alive the memory of Germany's lost overseas colonies, stripped away under the Treaty of Versailles. These notgeld pieces were issued as souvenirs rather than emergency currency in any strict sense, though they circulated freely enough among collectors and colonial revanchists alike.

Hermann von Wissmann, the honoree of this B5 piece, had led the brutal suppression of the Abushiri revolt in German East Africa in 1888–89 and was lionized in Wilhelmine Germany as a colonial hero. By 1921, memorializing him was a deliberate political act.
