Langeln is a small village in the Pinneberg district of Holstein, and its 1921 Notgeld series is among the more deliberately artistic of the Hamburg-region municipal issues — Erna Barg-Brieser's involvement as designer places it within a recognizable current of Weimar-era Notgeld that treated the small emergency note as a collectible object from the outset. Konrad Hanf, a Hamburg printer active across multiple north German municipal commissions during the 1921 peak of the Notgeld boom, handled production.
That collectibility was not incidental. By 1921, many municipalities were issuing Notgeld specifically to sell to collectors rather than to address any genuine small-change shortage — the Serie was often redeemed almost immediately after issue, with the postal trade doing most of the work.
