Kalkar — the small Rhineland town best known for its late-Gothic altarpieces — issued this 75 Pfennig Notgeld during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, when municipal and civic authorities across Germany were routinely printing their own emergency small-denomination currency to fill the gap left by a hopelessly inadequate central coin supply. The Reichsbank simply could not keep pace with demand as the mark collapsed.
