Pyritz (now Pyrzyce in northwestern Poland) was part of the Pomeranian province absorbed into Poland after 1945, which effectively erased the issuing institution from existence. This Notgeld piece was produced during the 1921 small-change crisis, when acute shortages of low-denomination coinage forced German district savings banks to issue their own emergency currency — a practice the Reichsbank tolerated but did not sanction.
The designer credit "Preiss" appears on a number of Pomeranian Notgeld series from this period, suggesting a regional commercial artist rather than a specialist printer's engraver.
